EVERYDAY WEAR — THE BASICS

Fine jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed, but a few simple habits will keep your piece looking its best for years to come.

🚿 Remove Before Water Take off your jewelry before showering, bathing, swimming, or using hot tubs. Soap residue dulls your stone's sparkle, and chlorine and salt water can damage gold and silver metals.
🧹 Remove During Housework Dishes, cleaning products, and hard surfaces can scratch metals and loosen stones. Take rings off before tasks that involve heavy use of your hands.
💪 Remove During Exercise Strenuous activity, weights, and impact can bend delicate settings or loosen accent stones. Remove your jewelry before working out.
🌙 Remove Before Bed Tossing and turning can put pressure on prongs and settings. Taking your ring off at night helps prevent loosening over time.
⚗️ Avoid Chemicals Bleach, chlorine, hairspray, perfume, and hand sanitizer can damage metal finishes — especially on gold filled pieces. Apply beauty products first, then put your jewelry on last.
👗 First Off, Last On Remove jewelry first when undressing and put it on last when dressing. This prevents snagging on clothing and hair, and protects delicate prongs.

Tip for rings: When putting a ring on or taking it off, hold it from the sides and gently wiggle side to side. Pulling from the top and bottom — especially on delicate designs — can bend the band over time.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR STONES

Even the most brilliant Moissanite will look cloudy if oil, lotion, and soap film build up on the back of the stone — that's where grime hides and blocks light from passing through. A quick clean brings the sparkle right back.

1 Soak
Mix ½ teaspoon of mild dish soap with 1 cup of warm water. Let your jewelry soak for 2–5 minutes.

2 Scrub Gently
Use a small, soft toothbrush to gently scrub around and underneath the stones where oil and dirt get trapped.

3 Rinse
Rinse in a bowl of clean warm water — not under running water, to avoid dropping your piece down the drain.

4 Dry & Polish
Lay on a soft towel to dry, then polish gently with a soft cloth (like the Luxe Gemmes ultra suede cloth) to restore full shine.

⚠️ Skip the ultrasonic cleaner. The vibrations can loosen or dislodge small stones. We recommend the gentle hand-cleaning method above for the safest results.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR METALS

Over time, all precious metals will naturally develop a patina. The good news is that restoring their shine is simple. Here are four effective methods:

  • Polishing cloth — Inexpensive and effective. Many come pre-moistened with cleaning solution. A quick buff restores shine in seconds.
  • Warm water & soap — Place the piece in warm soapy water for 15 minutes, scrub gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and polish dry.
  • Gold polish or dip — Commercial cleaners work well, but make sure the product is formulated specifically for solid gold or platinum — not just general jewelry.
  • Baking soda paste — Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a thick paste. Gently rub with a soft toothbrush, rinse under warm water, and dry with a soft cloth.

SPECIAL CARE FOR GOLD FILLED PIECES

Gold filled jewelry is made with a thick outer layer of 14K gold over a solid sterling silver core. It's durable, hypoallergenic, and water-resistant — but like anything plated, the gold layer will eventually wear with time. Proper care extends its life significantly.

Tips to extend the life of your gold filled pieces:

  • Avoid wearing during tasks with heavy hand use to prevent bumping and scratching
  • Remove before sleeping — sweat and friction from bedding accelerate wear
  • Be aware that skin pH varies; some people's perspiration causes gold to fade faster
  • Remove before exercise or any strenuous activity
  • Avoid contact with hand sanitizer, which can damage the gold finish

To clean: Gently rub with a soft cloth (such as the Luxe Gemmes ultra suede cloth) to remove surface dirt and restore shine. For deeper cleaning, use the warm soapy water method described above — use lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

If the sterling silver core begins to show through over time, polish it with a silver cleaning cloth — just as you would any sterling silver piece.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE

Even the most well-cared-for jewelry benefits from professional attention. We recommend:

  • Every few months: Have prongs and settings inspected if you wear your piece daily — especially rings, which are subject to the most contact and pressure.
  • Full eternity rings and accent-heavy designs: Check more frequently, as small stones can loosen with regular wear.
  • Solid gold and platinum pieces: May benefit from professional polishing once or twice a year to remove light surface scratches and restore luster.

If something feels loose or looks off, don't wait — contact us. It's always easier (and less expensive) to tighten a prong than to replace a lost stone. Our Warranty & Promises page has full details on what's covered.

STORAGE

How you store your jewelry matters just as much as how you wear it:

  • Store pieces separately to prevent scratching — especially rings and bracelets
  • Use a soft-lined jewelry box, individual pouches, or the original Luxe Gemmes packaging
  • Keep jewelry in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity
  • Avoid storing multiple pieces loosely in a drawer where they can rub against each other
